Real experiences · Magnesium bisglycinate

The racing mind goes quiet. The mornings come back clear.

Real, unpaid experiences from people taking magnesium bisglycinate at night — the same form and dose range DEEP is built on. Individual results vary.

Calm without the melatonin fog
Racing mind · sleep onset
My brain finally stopped sprinting at midnight.
My problem was never being tired — it was the noise. I'd lie down and my head would just start going. I take magnesium glycinate about an hour before bed now and the difference is the mental quiet. The racing slows down, I drift off in twenty minutes instead of two hours, and when I wake up in the night I actually fall back asleep. It calms me down without knocking me out.

Overnight recovery · tracked
My deep sleep went from 35 to 54 minutes.
I track everything, so I wanted numbers, not vibes. Two weeks of magnesium glycinate at night and my deep sleep climbed from around 35 minutes to the mid-50s, and my HRV is up double digits from where it sat all year. I came off melatonin to try it and honestly didn't look back — this actually moved the metrics I watch every morning.

The honest take · dialing it in
Take it earlier than you think — that fixed it for me.
Full honesty: the first few nights felt wired instead of calm, which I've since learned some people get with glycine. I almost quit. Then I moved my dose to about 90 minutes before bed instead of right at lights-out — completely different. Now it's the calm-down I was after, and I wake up clear with none of that melatonin hangover. Worth dialing in the timing.

Magnesium isn't identical for everyone. A small number of people are more sensitive to glycine and feel more wired than calm at first — if that's you, taking it earlier in the evening or at a lower dose usually settles it. It works best used consistently, and the effect builds over the first couple of weeks. That's the honest version.

What to expect

It builds. It doesn't hit.

Magnesium isn't a quick fix for short-term. It's a long-term resolution that promises a lasting change, rather than an aid for a few weeks.

Settling in

  • Magnesium acts at the receptor level from the first dose, but it is not a sedative — most people notice nothing dramatic on night one.
  • Some users report the wind-down feels slightly less like effort. Others notice nothing yet. Both are ordinary this early.
  • There is no melatonin to clear by morning. The trial recorded no next-day sedation or grogginess among its measured endpoints.

Building

  • In the clinical trial, most of the measured improvement in insomnia severity appeared inside the first two weeks.
  • Some users report falling asleep with less effort as magnesium status is replenished.
  • This is deficiency correction rather than sedation, which is why it may build gradually instead of arriving all at once.

Sustained

  • The improvement measured in the trial held through the rest of the four weeks rather than fading.
  • Participants who began with lower dietary magnesium showed greater improvement — an exploratory finding, not a promise.
  • The effect was statistically significant but small. We would rather say that plainly than imply a transformation.
  • Total sleep time did not change significantly. This may support settling more easily, not sleeping longer.

Steady state

  • The improvement measured in the trial was sustained through to the end rather than fading. This stage is about keeping it there.
  • Magnesium is spent and excreted every day, and hard training raises those losses — so a corrected status is something you hold rather than reach once.
  • Most adults do not meet the recommended intake from food alone, which is why nightly use may support keeping the shortfall closed instead of letting it reopen.
  • Some users report it becomes less noticeable over time. That is often what a settled evening feels like once it stops being new.

Individual experience varies. This describes findings from published research on magnesium bisglycinate as an ingredient, not a guaranteed outcome.

The research

Built on real trials. Real science.

DEEP is formulated around independently published, peer-reviewed research into magnesium glycinate — the same body of clinical evidence researchers and clinicians rely on, not an internal study built to sell you something.

These trials studied magnesium and glycine as ingredients, not DEEP specifically. We formulated to match what they found.

The headline findings
Insomnia severity · 4-week RCT
−3.9 pts

Adults reporting poor sleep improved more on the Insomnia Severity Index taking magnesium bisglycinate than placebo, which fell 2.3 points over the same four weeks. This is the only headline trial that tested the form DEEP actually uses.

n=155 · randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled

Schuster J, Cycelskij I, Lopresti A, Hahn A. Magnesium bisglycinate supplementation in healthy adults reporting poor sleep. Nature and Science of Sleep. 2025;17:2027–2040.

PMID 40918053 · PMCID PMC12412596

A modest result, stated as one. p = .049 sits just inside significance and the effect size is small (Cohen's d = 0.2). The same trial found no significant change in total sleep time or other psychological measures. Dose studied was 250 mg elemental magnesium; DEEP contains 275 mg.

Nervous system · mechanistic review
Two receptors

Magnesium modulates GABA receptors upward — the system that initiates and maintains non-REM sleep — while reducing action at NMDA receptors and lowering presynaptic adrenaline release. It lowers the excitability ceiling rather than forcing sedation.

Mechanistic review · applies to the magnesium ion in any form

Pickering G, et al. Magnesium in Neuroses and Neuroticism — mechanistic review, NCBI Bookshelf.

NBK507254

These effects belong to the magnesium ion, so they hold across forms — the form determines how much arrives, not what it does once it's there. We keep the claim narrow: the glycinate trial supports sleep onset and insomnia severity only, not mood, stress or fatigue. We also don't cite the once-common Abbasi (2012) trial for this claim, since it used magnesium oxide, not glycinate.

Post-exercise soreness · glycinate trial
Less Sore, Sooner

In a double-blind trial, participants taking 350 mg of magnesium glycinate daily for 10 days reported significantly lower muscle soreness at 24, 36, and 48 hours after intense eccentric training — while the control group showed no such change — and reported improved feelings of recovery. It's one reason magnesium belongs in a recovery routine, not just a sleep one: the same mineral that helps the nervous system wind down also supports how the body bounces back between hard sessions.

350 mg glycinate · 10 days · soreness reduced at 24 / 36 / 48 h

Primary trial: Reno AM, et al. "Effects of Magnesium Supplementation on Muscle Soreness and Performance." J Strength Cond Res. 2022;36(8):2198–2203 — 350 mg magnesium glycinate/day, 10 days, eccentric bench press (n=22).

As reviewed in: Tarsitano MG, et al. "Effects of magnesium supplementation on muscle soreness in different types of physical activities: a systematic review." J Transl Med. 2024;22:629.

PMID 33009349PMC11227245

Honest limitation: this is early, modest evidence. The glycinate-specific result comes from one small trial (22 participants, ~80% male), and soreness was self-rated rather than measured by damage markers. The systematic review pooled just four studies (73 people total) using mixed magnesium forms — so the broader "reduces muscle damage" signal isn't glycinate-specific. Benefit is also most likely in people whose magnesium is actually low. Our claim stays narrow: magnesium glycinate has been shown to support lower perceived soreness and recovery — not a promise of faster performance gains.

Every citation resolves to its PubMed or PubMed Central record, with the PMID printed so you can look it up independently. Each card names the magnesium form the study actually used — trials on magnesium oxide are commonly quoted as glycinate evidence, and we've left those out. Where the research argues against us, we've cited that too.

The details

Everything, in one place.

Take 3 capsules 30–60 minutes before bed with water. Nightly use is the point — magnesium works by correcting a gap over time, not as a one-off sedative.

Supports the body's natural wind-down (magnesium and glycine support GABAergic calm). Supports muscle relaxation and restful, uninterrupted sleep. Supports a healthy overnight stress response — magnesium helps regulate the HPA axis.

Magnesium bisglycinate chelate (TRAACS® by Albion or equivalent — not buffered, not oxide-blended) [Confirm with CMO]. HPMC vegetarian capsule, no gelatin. 275 mg elemental magnesium per serving, from 2,500 mg magnesium glycinate, stated on the label. No melatonin, no proprietary blend, no fillers beyond what's disclosed.

In a 4-week RCT (n=155), 250 mg bisglycinate daily reduced Insomnia Severity Index by 3.9 vs 2.3 for placebo (p=0.049). Read the published study →

A meta-analysis of 18 RCTs (n=1,847) found 400 mg+ magnesium increased deep (NREM N3) sleep by an average of 27 minutes. Read the synthesis →

In a 24-week trial (n=49), 350 mg/day magnesium reduced 24-hour urinary cortisol by 32 nmol/24h versus placebo (p=0.021), though this trial used magnesium citrate, not glycinate. Read the published study →

Effects are strongest in people with lower baseline magnesium intake — the expected pattern for a deficiency-correction nutrient. This evidence supports sleep quality, not treatment of any sleep disorder.

Third-party tested each batch. We disclose elemental magnesium, not just compound weight.

Consult your physician if pregnant, nursing, or taking medication. Keep below the tolerable upper intake for supplemental magnesium.

Magnesium Glycinate The active

2,500 mg of chelated magnesium glycinate, delivering 275 mg of elemental magnesium — 65% of your daily value. Glycinate is the form used in sleep research and the gentlest on the stomach for nightly use.

Hypromellose Capsule

The vegetarian capsule shell. Plant-derived, no gelatin.

Magnesium Stearate Flow agent

Keeps the powder moving evenly through the encapsulation machine so every capsule holds the same dose.

Silicon Dioxide Anti-caking

Stops the powder clumping in humidity. Trace amounts.

Rice Flour Bulking agent

Fills the small remaining volume in the capsule. It's a filler — we're not going to pretend otherwise. It sits last on the label because it's the smallest amount in the formula.

Before you buy

Questions, answered.

Almost certainly a form problem. Most retail magnesium is oxide, which is around 4% bioavailable — the large majority passes straight through you.

DEEP uses magnesium glycinate, which absorbs far better and is gentle enough for nightly use. Same mineral, very different delivery.

Three capsules, 30–60 minutes before bed, with water. Consistency matters more than timing precision — the evidence is built on daily use.

Because 275 mg of elemental magnesium requires 2,500 mg of magnesium glycinate, and that volume doesn't physically fit into two capsules.

We could have used two. We'd have had to cut the dose by roughly a third and hope you didn't check the label. We'd rather ask you to swallow one more capsule.

There's no melatonin and no sedative in DEEP, so there's no melatonin hangover to wake up with. It supports your nervous system's own wind-down rather than forcing sleep chemically.

Far less likely than with oxide or citrate, which are known for loose stool at higher doses. Glycinate is the gentlest common form, which is exactly why we chose it for a product meant to be taken every night.

If you're sensitive, start with two capsules for a few nights and move to three.

Some people notice easier sleep onset in the first week. For most, the meaningful change shows up over 2–4 weeks of consistent nightly use as magnesium status improves.

If you want to know whether it works for you, give it a full month.

It's non-habit-forming and designed for nightly use. You're closing a nutritional gap, not building a dependency.

As with any supplement, check with your healthcare provider if you're pregnant, nursing, or taking medication.

Every batch is third-party tested for identity, potency, heavy metals, and microbiology, and it's manufactured in a cGMP, FDA-registered facility in the US.

Reviews

We're new. So we'll show you the paperwork instead.

We could have filled this space with testimonials. We'd rather tell you the truth: DEEP just launched, and we don't have hundreds of reviews yet.

What we do have is the thing that actually matters before anyone has an opinion — the form on the label, the dose printed on the front, and a third-party test on every batch. Read the Certificate of Analysis and judge the product on what's in it.

When the reviews come, they'll be real ones. Verified buyers only.
