Daytime defense · Nighttime recovery

The recovery work your gut does long before you fall asleep.

Hard training strains more than muscle. It wears on the gut lining and the immune front line — the systems your recovery has to pass through. GUARD is built for that quieter half of the problem.

The primer

Why colostrum entered the recovery conversation.

Colostrum is the first thing a newborn calf drinks, and it's nothing like the milk that follows. Its job is to hand over a working defense system before the gut has finished sealing itself. Everything in it exists to protect a barrier and staff an immune response.

Its move into adult nutrition isn't sentimental. Those same signals still act on adult gut tissue — the tissue heavy training reliably strains. Sustained load makes the lining more permeable and holds the immune system in a defensive crouch between sessions, and neither shows up on a wearable.

What the evidence supports is narrower than the wellness aisle implies. The clearest patterns appear in people under real physiological strain — heavy blocks, dense travel, compressed recovery. That happens to describe the person Nocturn was built for, which is the only reason this product exists.

What it supports

Three systems, described plainly.

Gut barrier support

Sustained effort and rising core temperature strain the single-cell lining that separates the gut from the bloodstream; colostrum's repair signals act directly on that tissue.

In practice this is the least dramatic and most useful of the three. It tends to show up as a gut that stays quiet through harder sessions and unfamiliar food, rather than as anything you'd describe as an effect.

Mucosal immune resilience

The immune system's first contact with the outside world happens at mucosal surfaces; colostrum supplies antibodies and binding proteins that reinforce that layer.

Most relevant during the stretches that historically cost you training days — a heavy block, back-to-back travel, a season where everyone around you is sick. Support at the perimeter, not a guarantee.

Inflammatory recovery

Hard sessions raise inflammatory signaling by design; the question is how long it stays elevated before the body returns to repair.

The pattern worth caring about is between-session, not within-session. When that curve settles faster, consecutive hard days feel less like they're stacking on top of each other.

Descriptions of mechanism, not promises of outcome. Individual experience varies, and these effects are most evident in people under sustained physical or environmental stress.

Fit

Who this is for — and who should skip it.

A product that suits everyone is usually doing very little. Here is the honest sorting.

Most likely to benefit

Under real, repeated load

  • Lifters and endurance athletes training at genuine volume, not occasionally
  • Anyone stacking heavy physical output on top of a demanding professional life
  • Frequent travelers, shift workers, and people whose environment changes constantly
  • People already treating recovery as a practice — the same person who takes DEEP nightly
  • Skeptics who want the mechanism named before they'll take anything
Ask first, or skip entirely

Where this isn't the right tool

  • Anyone with a milk protein allergy or casein intolerance — this is a dairy-derived product
  • Anyone pregnant or nursing, without a conversation with their clinician first
  • Competitive athletes subject to anti-doping testing — see the note below
  • Anyone managing a diagnosed condition or on prescribed medication, without medical input
  • Anyone looking for a general wellness lift rather than recovery infrastructure

A note for tested athletes: bovine colostrum is a natural source of IGF-1, a substance that appears on anti-doping prohibited lists. GUARD is intended for high-output adults who are not subject to testing. If you compete under an anti-doping code, treat this as a conversation for your sport's compliance advisor before it's a conversation about recovery.

The system

Two halves of one day.

How we talk about this

The rules we wrote before the copy.

Colostrum attracts more overstatement than almost anything else in this category. These are the constraints we set for ourselves, published so you can hold us to them.

  • No mythologizing the ingredient. It won't be called precious, ancient, or golden anywhere we write. It's a well-studied dairy fraction with a specific job.
  • No compound counting.Advertising how many hundreds of substances are present measures nothing. We'll name the few with a real evidentiary case behind them and leave it there.
  • Mechanism before outcome, always. We'll describe what a compound acts on. We won't describe how your life will feel afterward — that isn't ours to claim.
  • Nothing framed as treatment. No conditions named, no illness prevented, nothing repaired or cured. Support is the honest verb and the only one we're entitled to.
  • The strong evidence and the thin evidence get equal airtime.Barrier support under exertion is the most consistent finding here. Other outcomes are less settled, and we'll keep saying which is which even when it's inconvenient.
  • The people it doesn't suit get told first. The dairy caveat and the testing caveat appear before the case for the product, not buried underneath it.

Questions worth asking first

Both things are true at once, which is why the question is fair. There's a real body of peer-reviewed work behind it, some of it going back decades and much of it done specifically in athletes — and there's also a marketing wave that has run far ahead of what that work supports. Our position is that the strongest findings concern the gut lining under physical exertion, that immune-related findings are meaningful but more variable, and that the broader lifestyle claims attached to the category are where things get thin.

DEEP addresses whether your body can get into a recovery state. GUARD addresses the condition of the systems that state has to work through. If the gut barrier is compromised and immune signaling is running hot, a good night still gets spent on inflammation before it reaches repair. They're solving adjacent problems from opposite ends of the day, and neither substitutes for the other.

It's built for people under sustained load — which usually means training, but not always. The relevant variable is physiological stress, so chronic travel, poor sleep, and unrelenting cognitive demand put someone in a similar position to a heavy training block. If none of that describes your life, we'd rather tell you the case for this is weaker than sell you on it anyway.

Not on our say-so. Colostrum contains IGF-1 naturally, and IGF-1 appears on anti-doping prohibited lists — so while colostrum itself isn't a banned substance, anti-doping bodies have been openly cautious about it. GUARD is designed for high-output adults outside that system. If you're tested, that conversation belongs with your sport's compliance advisor before it belongs with us.

Probably not in the way a stimulant announces itself, and we'd be suspicious of anything in this category that did. Infrastructure products are noticed in the negative — a gut that stays uneventful through a hard block, a stretch of heavy training that doesn't end with you run-down. Absence of disruption is a harder thing to sell than a sensation, but it's the honest description.

Because the meaningful amounts here are food-scale, not pill-scale. Delivering them in capsules would mean a handful of them, every morning, forever — a format most people abandon within a month. Powder also leaves room to adjust across a heavy block versus a lighter one, which capsules don't. It's a practical choice, not a purity one.

Because gut integrity is a fundamental — it's just an unglamorous one that nobody markets, which is precisely the pattern Nocturn was built around. The same person who tracks every training variable and buys the newest compound rarely gives a thought to the barrier that all of it has to pass through. That gap is the whole reason for this product.

GUARD exists to hold together the systems that heavy training quietly wears down, so the recovery you're already working for has somewhere intact to land. The dose, the label, the sourcing — those belong on the product page, not here.
